Hawar Tawfiq is regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary composers in the Netherlands, known for his distinctive artistic voice, with a pronounced focus on orchestral music. His works are performed nationally and internationally by leading orchestras, ensembles and soloists, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Philzuid, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Nürnberger Symphoniker and the Gulbenkian Orchestra.
Alongside his orchestral output, Tawfiq regularly composes chamber music by special invitation, translating his orchestral approach into more intimate settings without sacrificing expressive power. He has collaborated, among others, with the Hexagon Ensemble and the New European Ensemble. In addition, he has written compulsory works for several competitions, including Prix Annelie de Man Prize and the Dutch National Violin Competition Oskar Back.
His music is characterised by a rich and transparent musical language, a strong sense of dramaturgy, and a refined awareness of colour and space. In his compositions, music unfolds as a narrative: from subtle, mysterious textures to monumental eruptions in which the full orchestra is set in motion. Solo lines, layered orchestral colours and a keen sense of form go hand in hand.
Critics praise his ability to create a musical world that is both immediately engaging and deeply layered, where sound imagery, dramaturgy and emotional impact converge. His orchestral works are acclaimed for their transparency and expansive orchstral imagination, and for the natural way in which form and expression reinforce one another.
The press has responded enthusiastically to his work. De Volkskrant noted his transparent yet vibrant writing, driven by a sense of wonder in sound. Trouw described “half an hour of tremendously inventive music” and called his Requiem “a mass for the dead unlike any other”. De Groene Amsterdammer characterised him as “one of the most interesting and distinctive voices in the Dutch musical landscape”, while NRC named one performance the second-best classical concert of the year. Internationally, his music was described during the World New Music Days in Portugal as “an engrossing musical narrative, articulated with real flair and invention”.
Hawar Tawfiq is currently working on several new orchestral commissions. The next premieres are scheduled from February 2026 onwards.

Hawar Tawfiq geldt als een van de meest vooraanstaande hedendaagse componisten in Nederland, bekend om zijn onderscheidende signatuur, met een uitgesproken focus op de orkestmuziek. Zijn werken worden nationaal en internationaal uitgevoerd door vooraanstaande orkesten, ensembles en solisten, waaronder het Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest, het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Philzuid, het Radio Philharmonisch Orkest, het BBC Symphony Orchestra, de Nürnberger Symphoniker en het Gulbenkian Orchestra.
Naast zijn orkestwerk schrijft Tawfiq regelmatig kamermuziek op bijzondere uitnodiging, waarin hij zijn orkestrale denkwijze vertaalt naar intiemere bezettingen zonder aan expressieve kracht in te boeten. Zo werkte hij onder meer samen met het Hexagon Ensemble en het New European Ensemble. Daarnaast componeerde hij verplichte werken voor verschillende concoursen, waaronder de Prix Annelie de Man en het Nederlands Vioolconcours Oskar Back.
Zijn muziek wordt gekenmerkt door een rijke en transparante klanktaal, een sterke dramaturgische lijn en een verfijnd gevoel voor kleur en ruimte. In zijn composities ontvouwt de muziek zich als een narratief: van subtiele, mysterieuze texturen tot monumentale erupties waarin het volledige orkest in beweging komt. Solistische lijnen, gelaagde orkestkleuren en een scherp gevoel voor vorm gaan daarbij hand in hand.
Critici prijzen zijn vermogen om een muzikale wereld te scheppen die zowel direct als diep gelaagd is, waarin klankschildering, dramaturgie en emotionele zeggingskracht samenvallen. Zijn orkestwerken worden geroemd om hun transparantie en expansieve klankzin, en om de vanzelfsprekende manier waarop vorm en expressie elkaar versterken.
De pers reageerde herhaaldelijk lovend op zijn werken. De Volkskrant schreef dat Tawfiq transparant schrijft, maar met bruis, en zich richt op verwondering in klank. Trouw sprak van “een half uur geweldig inventieve muziek” en noemde zijn Requiem “een dodenmis als geen ander”. De Groene Amsterdammer typeerde hem als “een van de interessantste en persoonlijkste stemmen in het Nederlandse muzieklandschap”, terwijl NRC een uitvoering uitriep tot de op één na beste klassieke uitvoering van het jaar. Internationaal werd zijn muziek tijdens de World New Music Days in Portugal omschreven als “een meeslepend muzikaal narratief, vormgegeven met grote flair en inventiviteit”.
Momenteel werkt Hawar Tawfiq aan meerdere nieuwe orkestopdrachten. De eerstvolgende premières staan gepland vanaf februari 2026.
